Musala – Belmeken

What Musala – Belmeken includes:

Scenic trip through Eastern Rila mount, plus hiking the highest summit on the Balkans.

Day 1

Borovets (1,300 m) – Everest Cabin (2,709 m)

Departure from Sofia at 8:30 a.m. (The car park of Sportna Sofia, the tennis tables in Borisova Garden.)

During the first day we will have to overcome positive denivelation of 1,400 metres.

We leave from the foot of the mountain and we ascend, following the Musalenska Bistritsa River.

We spend the night in Everest Cabin.

Duration – 6 hours.

Day 2

Everest Cabin (2,709 m) – Musala (2,925 m) – Mancho (2,771 m) – Zavrachitsa Lodge (2,178 m)

We are about to climb the highest peak on the Balkans. But from the cabin to the peak it only takes about 40 minutes, so it will not be very difficult. The trail goes below the ridge of Trionite, towards the peak of Marishki Chal (2,760 m), from where we will have a fantastic view over the Marichin Cirque. Lunch follows. After the lunch, we start climbing the peak of Mancho. Then we go down along the saddle of Zavrachitsa towards the peak of Zavrachitsa.

Duration – 6 hours.

Day 3

Zavrachitsa Lodge (2,178 m) – Belmeken Lodge (2,224 m)

After breakfast we start going up again, climbing the peak of Yanchov Chal (2,481 m), to the left we see the Kazanski Lakes. After about an hour and a half of walking and endless panoramic views over the eastern part of Rila and Pirin, we reach and cross the peaks of Ushite (2,404 m) and Sivrichal (2,641 m). Going just below the peak of Ravni chal, we start our descent towards Belmeken Lodge (2,224 m).

During this day we will follow the Keiser’s Road, built by Serbian hostages in the Second World War.

Duration – 6.5 hours.

Day 4

Belmeken Lodge (2,224 m) – Belmeken Peak (2,626 m/2 hours) – Belmeken Reservoir (1,923 m/kayaking)

The last day our programme will be quite easy. For breakfast we will overcome positive denivelation of 400 metres, climbing the peak of Belmeken. Then, we will have lunch on the peak. We then descend to Belmeken Reservoir.

After about two hours of kayaking, we go to the village of Momin Prohod, in order to take a deserved mineral bath. As long as we have the time and desire, we could also visit the Gate of Trajan Fortress on our way to Sofia.

Duration – 5 hours.

Travel is shared.

The approximate price for a night is 7 EUR and is paid when we get there. The lodges provides food.

Important: Departure and travel times are approximate and they depend on the pace of the whole group. These also include time for rest.

The guide has the right to change the route upon unexpected circumstances!

For the trek you will need insurance, dry food and water.
